Monthly Speech Therapy Tip: Creating Communication Opportunities Through the Environment

The Tip:
Use environmental manipulation to naturally encourage communication. Place a favorite toy just out of reach. Tighten the lid on a snack container slightly. Hold onto a puzzle piece or toy for a few extra seconds. These small pauses create a meaningful reason for a child to communicate.

While you wait, model the language you want the child to use, such as “help,” “open,” “more,” or “my turn.” Then pause and give them time to respond. The goal is not to frustrate, but to gently prompt a request or comment so the child learns that communication helps them get what they want.

You can model using spoken words, signs, or pictures. Just be sure the child is watching and attending to you before you model. That visual attention is key for learning.

Materials Needed:
Simple toys or snacks you already use in sessions or at home.

Why It Works:
This strategy turns everyday moments into powerful communication opportunities and helps children learn that their words or signs have real impact.
